Corporate Revolution: The Power in Planning

November 30, 2015 | 1 Comment

Goal setting is essential to growth and reaching your full potential in your career. It is good to have an idea of what you would like to accomplish but it’s great to map out steps to get there. Goals can often be daunting when we think about how much effort it really takes to get things done. The power in planning is creating feasible steps to make any dream come true.

  1. Write it Down

I write down all of my goals, big and small. Whether it’s something I want to make sure I get done this week or how I would like to see my life change over the course of the year. Studies show that the most successful people write their goals down and achieve them more often than individuals that do not.

    2.  Map a Plan

Now think of what steps you need to get to each goal. Under each goal start with the first step you need to accomplish. This first step will likely be small and can easily be victim of procrastination. Do not fall behind and take each step day-by-day. You will soon see that by dividing your goal into smaller steps makes it more reasonable to accomplish. The key is to make each step measurable and time bound so you know how to recognize its success.

       3.  Celebrate Your Progress

Every time you check one of the steps off your list, do something to reward yourself. Although you will experience setbacks and failures, you will be more resilient to keep going after your goal if you use positive reinforcement. The bigger and more difficult the step, the bigger your reward to yourself should be. More importantly, you should feel proud of yourself for making the progress.

       4.  Use Your Resources

When you need to get to the next step in your plan, chances are you will need some help. Most goals cannot be accomplished alone. Resources may include someone who can provide a service, teach you how to do it better or just cheer you on along the way. In the pursuit of many goals, I have enlisted the help of friends, co-workers and family. Do not be afraid of constructive critics when finding your resources. Getting an outside opinion may help you see your goal from a different perspective. It is important to always remember never be afraid to ask for help. In the end it will make you a better person and get you closer to your goal.

I am a huge believer in planning, but asking for help has always been difficult for me, but after reading your article I see it is important as well.
